Fibromyalgia:

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by extensive fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory and mood issues. Research says in fibromyalgia your brain and spinal cord process painful and non-painful signals in a different manner leading to amplification of pain sensations.

Symptoms can occur at point of time , most often after an inciting event, such as physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. While in other cases, it gradually accumulates over time with no triggering event.

Women are affected more than men. Those with fibromyalgia could also present with tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, depression and mental distress.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia can be confused with those of arthritis, or joint inflammation. However, unlike arthritis, it has not been found to inflammation or damage to the joints.

  Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, fatigue, and other types of discomfort.
  Symptoms mimic arthritis, but fibromyalgia does not affect the joints and its mostly the soft tissue.
  Unknown cause, but risk factors include traumatic injury, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune  disorders, such as lupus, and genetic factors.
  There is no one medications that works due to the wide spectrum of the disease, but a multi-modal approach combining medications, exercises, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy can help relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

Symptoms:

• Widespread pain
• Fatigue
• Stiff joints and muscles in the morning
• Headaches
• Irregular sleep patterns
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Painful menstrual periods
• Tingling and numbness in the hands and feet
• Sensitivity to cold or heat
• Difficulties with memory and concentration, known as “fibro-fog”

Other symptoms that you may experience:

• Problems with vision
• Nausea
• Pelvic and urinary problems
• Weight gain
• Dizziness
• Cold or flu-like symptoms
• Skin problems
• Chest symptoms
• Depression and anxiety

Symptoms can appear at any time during a person’s life, but they are most commonly occur around 35 – 45 years.

Treatment

Treatment is usually individualised owing to the wide spectrum of the condition. Patient’s experience a different set of symptoms, and an individual treatment plan will be necessary.

Treatment requires an integrated approach:

• Medications
• Psychotherapy
• Behavioural therapy
• Physical therapy

Fibromyalgia may also be hereditary. Females who have a close relative with fibromyalgia have a higher risk of experiencing it themselves. People with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or spinal arthritis, known ankylosing spondylitis, have a risk of developing fibromyalgia, as do patients with some other rheumatic diseases.

General population needs to understand that this is not a life threatening condition, but it can interfere with everyday function and quality of life. People with the condition may find that it can affect their employment, family, and social life yet all of this is manageable.
