Too young for Knee Pain?

We see a sudden rise in incidence of Knee Pain? knee pain in the younger population off late. Are you wondering what could be the possible reason for this? As we all are aware that knee pain due to arthritis was commonly seen in the older population in their fourth or fifth decade of life not vice versa and often associated with the gradual wear and tear on weight bearing joints over time and aging.

OA is caused by damage or wearing away of the joint cartilage between the thigh bone and shin bone leading to inflammation in the knee joint. Therefore bone-on-bone contact between the thigh bone and shin bone cause knee pain and stiffness. So let us look at the reasons why knee pain is on the rise in the younger age group over the years and why they are more prone to early arthritis of the knee.

Sedentary lifestyle

In today’s digital era everything that you need is one click away which has modified our lifestyle into a predominantly sedentary mode. Although it has made life easy for us it has become a major risk factor for most of the diseases leading to a rise in co morbidities much early in life.

Sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity over the years. This obesity plays a key role in the development of early OA due to constant pressure on the knee joint due to overweight.

Joint injury

Research shows that a knee joint injury suffered at a younger age predisposes to the development of early OA. Injuries involving anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus (cartilage) tears are usually associated with early onset of arthritis of the knee. Most commonly seen in sports injuries but it can even occur sometimes due to a trivial trauma.

Occupational

Occupational activities can also cause knee pain and predispose to early OA . Anything that requires lifting heavy weights, prolonged standing, squatting etc can damage knee joints.
